High demand for 5G communication base stations

Lithium iron phosphate batteries used in the communication field are being purchased by China Mobile, as well as by companies such as China Tower and China Telecom.

At the end of 2020, the bidding notice for the joint centralized bidding project of China's iron towers and China's telecommunications backup lithium iron phosphate battery products was announced, with an estimated bidding volume of 2.09GWh. Among them, the estimated bidding volume for China's iron towers reached 2GWh, and the estimated bidding volume for China's telecommunications was 0.9GWh. At the end of February of this year, the bidding results for the joint centralized bidding project of China's iron tower and China's telecommunications backup lithium iron phosphate battery products have been announced. The five winning companies are Lianhe Tianyi, Nandu Power Supply, Zhongtian Technology, Shuangdeng Group, and Yipeng Energy. The winning shares are approximately 849.5MWh for Lianhe Tianyi, 591.5MWh for Nandu Power, 349MWh for Zhongtian Technology, 200MWh for Shuangdeng Group, and 100MWh for Yipeng Energy.

This is the first standard for lithium-ion batteries in the 2021 base station, and it is also the first time that the price of lithium iron phosphate batteries is below 0.5 yuan/Wh. Because in the bidding for this project, the post tax quotes of Lishi New Energy, Lianhe Tianyi, and Shuangdeng Group were all lower than 0.5 yuan/Wh.

From the perspective of the market environment, the construction of 5G base stations is the main force of China's seven "new infrastructure", including operators such as China Mobile, China Unicom, China Telecom, Radio and Television, China Tower, and Huawei, all of which are making efforts in this field.

Liu Liehong, Deputy Department of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said at the opening ceremony of the Mobile World Congress Shanghai Exhibition in 2021 that China has built more than 718000 5G base stations, accounting for about 70% of the world's total.

Some comments point out that based on the previous 4G promotion and application cycles, it is speculated that 2021-2023 will be the peak period for the construction of 5G base stations, and the demand for lithium iron phosphate batteries for 5G base stations in 2021 is expected to reach 10GWh.
