The coating process is divided into three parts: the first is the slurry feeding system, the second is the coating system, and the third is the polar drying system. The trinity requires that each system can maintain stability to ensure the consistency of the pole piece. This article will discuss the effect of coating on the performance consistency of lithium battery.
The slurry feeding system is to transfer the slurry after mixing to the storage tank, transfer it to the transition cylinder through the diaphragm pump, and then use the screw pump to stably output the slurry to the coating equipment through the filtering device and the iron removal device for coating. Several points needing attention in the automatic feeding system of slurry are to prevent the stratification of slurry in the storage tank, the slurry level in the transition cylinder, the stability of the screw pump, and the blockage of the filter tank. The coating methods of lithium battery slurry mainly include comma scraper type, transfer type and slit extrusion type. The three coating methods have their own characteristics. The scraper coating is mainly used in laboratory conditions, the transfer coating is mainly used in the production of 3C batteries, and the slit extrusion coating is mainly used in power batteries. The parameters characterizing the stability of the electrode are mainly the surface density, thickness and adhesion of the electrode. In the coating system, the main factors that affect the consistency of the electrode are the manufacturing accuracy of the coating head, the stability of the slurry conveyed by the screw pump, the stability of the compressed gas, the stability of the speed and the control of the dynamic tension.

The pole drying system is mainly composed of several ovens with different temperature distribution, and the purpose is to dry the pole. In the drying system, it is necessary to pay attention to the setting of drying temperature. If the temperature is too high during the coating process, it is easy to cause the pole piece to crack. If the temperature is too low, the pole piece cannot be completely dried, which will lead to inconsistent local polarization of the battery. In addition, pay attention to the problem of preventing the binder from floating.
The common problems in the coating process are thick head and thin tail, thick edges on both sides, dark spots, rough surface, exposed foil and other defects. The thickness of the head and tail can be adjusted by the switching time of the coating valve or the intermittent valve. The thick edge problem can be improved from the aspects of slurry properties, coating gap adjustment, slurry flow rate, etc. The surface roughness, unevenness and stripes can be improved by stabilizing the foil, reducing the speed, adjusting the angle of the air knife, etc.
