IEC 62619 focuses on the safety requirements of energy storage batteries and battery systems. It not only conducts safety tests such as external short circuit, impact, drop, thermal abuse, overcharge, and forced discharge on battery cells and battery modules, but also evaluates the functions of the battery management system (BMS) such as overcharge voltage protection, overcharge current protection, overheating protection, and resistance to the spread of thermal runaway.

As a standard for battery applications in industrial products, the release of IEC 62619:2017 has filled the gap of lithium battery standards in this field. The applications of lithium batteries in industrial products include: fixed products, such as telecommunication base stations, uninterruptible power supplies, energy storage systems, emergency power supplies, etc.; mobile products, such as forklifts, golf carts, automated guided vehicles and other non-road vehicles.

In addition to including the traditional types of tests covered in the existing lithium battery standards, such as electrical tests, thermal tests, and mechanical tests, the new standard also adds a special section to assess the battery management system (software evaluation). Previously, in the IEC battery standard system, there were few explicit requirements and evaluation methods for the functional safety of batteries. With the IEC 62619 standard standardizing the conventional safety and functional safety of industrial lithium batteries, it combines the current hot technologies - functional safety and new energy batteries perfectly, which will greatly promote technological innovation and standard improvement.

IEC 62619: The international safety standard for energy storage battery cells/batteries, with voluntary certification and no need for factory inspection. If applying for TUV-MARK to use the TUV LOGO, a factory inspection is required.

Applicable products: Battery cells such as 18650, 26650 and assembled finished products for energy storage purposes.

Samples to be prepared: 15 pieces of batteries + 40 pieces of battery cells

Test items:

8.2.1 External short circuit test (external short circuit of battery cells)

8.2.3 Drop test (drop of battery cells/batteries)

8.2.4 Thermal abuse test (thermal shock of battery cells)

8.2.5 Overcharge test (overcharge of battery cells)

8.2.6 Forced discharge test (forced discharge of battery cells)

8.3 Consideration of internal short circuit (select one from the two options)

8.3.2 Internal short-circuit test
