Users of digital products have found that over time, battery capacity will inevitably decrease. Although the battery life was good when it was first purchased, after 2 years of frequent charging and discharging, it is completely different. The good news is that scientists from the US Department of Energy recently seem to have figured out one of the mechanisms that cause battery "shrinkage" and are expected to come up with strategies to address it in the future. In a common lithium-ion rechargeable battery, lithium ions can travel through the electrolyte of the anode and cathode, resulting in a current that supplies power to the device. And the so-called capacity can be simply understood as the volume of lithium ions running back and forth in the battery (during charging and discharging).

When manganese ions (gray in the above picture) are stripped from the cathode (blue area) of the battery, they react with the electrolyte near the anode (gold area) and capture lithium ions (green yellow in the above picture).

The study by the US Department of Energy found that the materials that make up battery electrodes often break down and decompose, allowing certain metal ions (specifically manganese) to float freely and run to the opposite electrode, trapping lithium ions.

As time goes by, more and more lithium ions cannot be put into normal operation (locked), and the capacity of the battery gradually decreases as a result, ultimately leading to the inability to continue supplying the ideal battery life.

The co-author of the research paper, Daniel Abraham, explained that there is a strict correlation between the management of manganese elements on the electrode and the amount of trapped lithium ions. However, we now know the underlying mechanism and will find ways to overcome it in the future.
