Until more than three years ago, the water-based zinc batteries studied in universities (with aqueous electrolytes) could only be charged and discharged 100 to 300 times.
Zhi Chunyi and a group of doctoral students started researching water-based zinc batteries more than three years ago, but encountered many difficulties in the early stages. Two years ago, they abandoned strong alkaline electrolytes and switched to weak acidic electrolytes, and made a significant breakthrough by using nano manganese dioxide material as one of the electrodes, increasing the number of charges and discharges to over 1000 times; And after 1000 charges and discharges, its storage capacity can still maintain at the initial 97%.
A few years ago, soft lithium-ion batteries were not yet commercially produced. They hoped to develop soft water-based zinc batteries to meet market applications and needs, such as wearable electronic products. Since the electrolyte of the water system zinc battery was originally liquid, which was difficult to package and easy to leak, they added hydrogel to make the electrolyte become semi-solid, which could not only maintain the characteristics of softness and flexibility, but also be easy to package. In case of package damage, the electrolyte would not leak.
In addition, due to the presence of water in the electrolyte of water-based zinc batteries, they are inherently non flammable and safer than organic electrolytes of lithium-ion batteries. After improvement, the water-based zinc battery they developed will not explode or catch fire in extremely harsh working environments such as impact, cutting, burning, bending, etc., and can continue to provide stable power supply, greatly improving safety.
