Lithium ion battery companies vying for market share in the shipbuilding market

Currently, more and more battery companies are turning their attention to the field of ships and developing targeted marine lithium iron phosphate battery systems. However, there are not many companies that can pass the standards in product quality and technology. The electric ship market has enormous potential and is in its early stages, with many companies already paying attention to and venturing into it. Currently, leading companies in the industries such as Ningde Times and Yiwei Lithium Energy are laying out lithium-ion batteries for ships. And lithium iron phosphate batteries have become one of the best choices for marine power lithium-ion batteries at present due to their advantages of high safety, long life, low cost, and balanced performance

The trend of green and intelligent development in the shipping industry has given birth to electric ships. Faced with the increasing pressure of energy conservation and emission reduction in the shipping industry, the exploration of new energy sources in the domestic shipping industry is accelerating. For power lithium-ion battery companies, the billion dollar blue ocean market urgently needs to be opened.

On June 28, 2019, the launch ceremony of the world's first batch of 5000 ton new energy bulk carrier project was held at the headquarters of Yiwei Lithium Energy in Huizhou. The two cooperating parties, Huizhou Yiwei Lithium Energy Co., Ltd. and Shanghai Hanshun Shipping Co., Ltd., signed a cooperation agreement. The Junlv ship is supplied by Yiwei Lithium Energy with lithium iron phosphate ion batteries, and integrated with the electric propulsion system designed by China Shipbuilding 712 Research Institute.

In January 2019, Ningde Times and China Classification Society (CCS) Wuhan Institute of Standardization signed a strategic cooperation agreement in Fujian. In June of the same year, Ningde Times revealed that the company had signed a cooperation agreement with multiple parties in the field of electric ships. Among them, the first pure electric official ship in the Yangtze River Basin, the "Haixun 12909" of the Yangtze Three Gorges Navigation Management Bureau, is equipped with a lithium iron phosphate battery from the Ningde era, with a capacity of 0.68MWh and a maximum speed of 21km/h.

It is reported that Yiwei Lithium Energy will cooperate with Shanghai Hanshun to complete the design, processing, installation, debugging, inspection, technical support, and after-sales service of the battery system for this series of new energy ship projects, and provide the optimal treatment method for the lithium iron phosphate battery system. As of now, the total installed capacity of Yiwei Lithium Energy Marine Battery has exceeded 30MWh, and the number of new energy ships loaded has exceeded 100.

Power lithium-ion battery giant BYD has also revealed its intention to enter the field of electric ships. As early as 2016, Wang Chuanfu, Chairman and President of BYD Group, expressed his hope to cooperate with Guilin City in areas such as electrification of travel ships. Companies such as Xingying Technology and Fengfan are also conducting related inspections of lithium-ion batteries for ships. According to a validation cycle of 1.5-2 years, more companies will enter the marine battery market in two years.

Summary: Lithium batteries are widely used and the era of ship electrification is approaching. The development of green ships is the trend, and electric ships are the long-term solution. From a broader perspective, lithium-ion batteries are the widely used energy system in the future. The cost and expenses of the entire system are rapidly decreasing, and maintenance and support are also more convenient. These have laid a solid foundation for the use of lithium iron phosphate batteries on ships.
