19. Oxidized graphene makes rubber stronger

Natural rubber is a viscous liquid, but adding crosslinking agents and filler particles can produce solid elastic materials. However, this process is time-consuming and labor-intensive. Now researchers from Sichuan and Harvard University have found that graphene oxide (GO) can crosslink and strengthen rubber in a simple step.

Vijayaraghavan, the leader of Manchester's Nanofunctional Materials Group, said: Composite materials consist of two parts, a soft and light matrix and a strong filler. In a word, they are both light and strong. This is the principle behind carbon fiber composites used in sports cars or Kevlar composites used for armor. In this case, we have made a soft and elastic but fragile rubber composite material from graphene, resulting in stronger and softer materials.

20. Graphene provides new functions for molecular electronics

An international research team led by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and the University of Bern has developed a new approach to regulating the functionality of next-generation molecular electronic devices using graphene. These results can be utilized to develop smaller, higher performance devices for a range of applications, including molecular detection, flexible electronic devices, energy conversion and storage, and stable measurement settings for resistance standards.

The research results reported in the Journal of Scientific Progress indicate significant changes in the development of graphene based molecular electronics, as the reproducibility of covalent contact between molecules and graphene (even at room temperature) overcomes the limitations of the current state of state-of-the-art technology based on minting metals.

The research results will also help researchers improve the efficiency of catalysts or devices in electrocatalysis and energy conversion research by designing graphene/molecular interfaces in their experimental systems.
