Recently, using simple layer by layer coating technology, researchers from the United States and South Korea have developed a paper flexible supercapacitor with the best performance of high energy and high power density.

We usually judge the advantages and disadvantages of energy storage devices based on three properties: energy density, power density, and cycle stability. Compared to batteries, supercapacitors typically have high power density, but low energy density, meaning that their ability to store electricity is weaker than batteries, but their instantaneous charging and discharging capabilities are better than batteries.

So if you want to use capacitors as energy storage devices, their low energy density is the biggest limitation. In order to improve the performance of supercapacitors, Lee and collaborator Jinhan Cho from the Department of Chemistry and Bioengineering at the University of Korea conducted research on increasing the energy density of supercapacitors while maintaining their high power output.

In the experiment, first, they immersed the paper sample in a beaker containing a solution of amine surfactant material, which can bind gold nanoparticles to the paper; Next, they immersed the paper in a solution containing gold nanoparticles. Due to the fact that paper is essentially a fiber and the fibers are porous, surfactants and nanoparticles will firmly adhere to the fibers after entering them, forming a conformal coating on each fiber.
