What lessons should China learn from the large-scale recycling of modern electric vehicles?

In 2020, benefiting from the explosive sales of electric vehicles in Europe, LG's chemical battery business market share increased significantly, surpassing Panasonic to become the world's second largest battery supplier and catching up with Ningde Times. As the core battery supplier of domestically produced Tesla ModelY, LG's chemical battery business was originally expected to experience rapid growth and had already planned to independently list the battery sector, hitting the top market share. However, with the fermentation of this recycling event, the prospects for boosting have been greatly questioned.
How to reduce safety anxiety?
For the Hyundai recycling incident, Chinese consumers should still be concerned about the supply situation of LG Chemical among domestic electric vehicle brands.
At present, LG Chemical has four battery factories in Michigan, South Korea's Wucang, Wroclaw, Poland, and Nanjing, China. Among them, the Nanjing factory mainly supplies domestic Tesla Model3 and ModelY, and the battery models supplied are mainly NCM811 ternary lithium batteries. The modern KONA electric version that undergoes spontaneous combustion is mainly equipped with LG Chemical's NCM622 ternary lithium batteries.
What lessons should China learn from the large-scale recycling of modern electric vehicles?
From a technical perspective, the main change in NCM811 compared to NCM622 is that the nickel content in NCM (nickel cobalt manganese) has increased from 60% to 80%. In power batteries, the higher the proportion of highly active nickel, the higher the energy density, but the stability will also decrease, leading to an increased risk of thermal runaway and spontaneous combustion.
It is ironic that when designing the KONA electric version, it was precisely in pursuit of higher reliability that the NCM811 battery with higher energy density was abandoned, and the NCM622 battery with more conservative technology was chosen. However, it overturned, and the reliability of the NCM811 battery attracted even more attention.
In fact, in order to better address endurance anxiety, the NCM811 battery has been adopted by many domestic new electric vehicle companies, such as NIO ES6 and Xiaopeng P7. Among traditional car companies, GAC New Energy's AionS, which focuses on long endurance, initially used the NCM811 battery. However, after three consecutive spontaneous combustion incidents within four months, the AionS was replaced with a more reliable NCM523 battery.
