Just a few days before the recycling, on February 15th, a modern electric bus caught fire while driving. This was the first electric vehicle in South Korea to experience a battery fire while driving. Since 2018, the KONA electric version has experienced about 15 battery charging self ignition accidents worldwide.

What lessons should China learn from the large-scale recycling of modern electric vehicles?

The blame for these accidents ultimately turned to South Korean battery giant LG Chemical, as they were all equipped with battery packs from LG Chemical.

In this recycling process, Hyundai has clearly proposed to replace the vehicle's battery pack and may switch the battery supplier from LG Chemical to another Korean company SKI. However, regarding the huge recycling cost of 5.8 billion yuan, Hyundai and LG Chemical currently have significant differences and have not reached an agreement.

Hyundai's attitude towards LG Chemical is in stark contrast to the first recycling of the KONA electric version in October last year. At that time, Hyundai did not abandon LG Chemical and only upgraded its battery management system. However, as the KONA electric version self ignition accident continued to occur, Hyundai seemed to have changed its mind.
