The two major constraints of electric bicycles are their speed and their range. The new national standard for electric bicycles imposes strict limits on the maximum speed of vehicles, requiring a speed not exceeding 25km/h. But there are no restrictions on the range. In theory, as long as the battery technology is mature enough, the ultimate range of electric bicycles can be continuously broken through. So is this really the case?
The first factor affecting the range of electric vehicles is the battery. That is to say, the larger the battery capacity, the farther the electric vehicle will run, followed by power consumption, size, and weight. The new standard for electric vehicles requires that the voltage of the battery should not exceed 48V, the total weight should not exceed 55kg, the maximum width should not exceed 450mm, and the wheelbase of the two wheels should not exceed 1250mm. In fact, to some extent, it also limits the range. Let's analyze and analyze together:
Electric vehicles mainly use two types of batteries: traditional lead-acid batteries and emerging lithium batteries. The traditional lead-acid battery, mainly made of lead, is characterized by its bulkiness. Due to the new regulations on the weight of the vehicle body, for many new standard models, adding a set of 48V20Ah lead-acid batteries has already exceeded 55 kilograms in total weight. And the range is not very ideal. Obviously, only four small batteries of 48V12Ah in lead-acid batteries barely meet the weight requirements of the new regulations. So what is the maximum range of a 48V12Ah lead-acid battery under ideal conditions? Someone has tested that it can reach a maximum of 50 kilometers in idle mode.
The larger the capacity and volume of lead-acid batteries, the heavier their weight! The space and mass of the car itself will be greatly occupied by batteries, so it is even more unrealistic to install large capacity lead-acid batteries such as 48V32Ah on new national standard cars. As a result, lithium batteries with lighter weight and higher energy density have become a hot topic for manufacturers. The weight of a 48V20Ah lithium battery is only about one-fifth that of a lead-acid battery, but the actual range can reach over 80 kilometers.
