On February 26, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, an electric vehicle manufacturer, tweeted on personal social media Twitter on Thursday, local time, that the company would replace some ternary lithium batteries of electric vehicles with lithium iron batteries.

Musk said in his tweet, "Nickel is the most worrying problem in the production of lithium batteries. That's why we have to replace the standard mileage version of electric vehicles with lithium iron batteries. Lithium batteries rich in iron!"

Musk had previously asked miners to produce more nickel. However, Allan Ray Restauro, a metal analyst, said that the supply of nickel would continue to be tight in the next three years. With the rising demand, a serious nickel supply shortage may occur as early as 2023.

Nickel is a key component used in the production of ternary lithium battery for electric vehicles, which makes the battery energy density higher and allows to reduce the use of cobalt in the battery. Because cobalt is more expensive, the supply chain is more opaque.

Since the beginning of this year, commodity prices have risen across the board, and nickel prices on the London Metal Exchange have risen by 16%. Investors are betting on strong demand growth as the economy continues to recover.
