Researchers at the Argonne laboratory in France are currently in the initial development of air lithium batteries, which, according to some scientists, will have an energy storage capacity 100 times stronger than existing electric forklift battery packs.

The personnel at the Aragon laboratory stated that air lithium batteries can achieve the aforementioned goals, and possibly even more. Currently, the project has received government funding support of $8.8 million.

A regular lithium battery uses lithium ions that move out of the anode's carbon rod and are transferred to the oxide metal at the cathode through an electrolyte (usually lithium salt). Air lithium batteries use a lithium anode and a porous cathode carbon rod to allow lithium ions to move freely through the supplied oxygen. However, in the eyes of laypeople, this is the breathing of air lithium-ion batteries, and the capacity of lithium-ion batteries depends on the amount of lithium ions contained in the cathode. By adopting this structure, the battery can be smaller, lighter, and possibly cheaper. Additionally, it is possible to provide stronger power for electric forklifts equipped with such batteries, allowing them to travel 100 kilometers or even more on a single charge.

Air lithium battery technology is still in its early stages, but with the development of clean energy technology, major universities and car manufacturers around the world are striving to find the future direction of electric forklifts. Most experts say that battery technology takes ten (or even twenty) years to truly reduce costs and put into use.
