Chubu University of Japan has developed a new type of air electrode material for solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) electrode. This air electrode combines lanthanum nickel oxide with gadolinium oxide doped cerium oxide, achieving high performance.

SOFC, as a household fuel cell system "ENE-FARM", is gradually becoming popular, with a working temperature of approximately 750 ℃. The newly developed air electrode material can reduce the working temperature to slightly above 500 ℃. As a result, ferrite based stainless steel, which is inexpensive but prone to high-temperature corrosion, can be used, thereby significantly reducing costs.

As the working temperature decreases, the starting ability also improves, so mobile devices can also be used, such as auxiliary power units (APUs) for aircraft and extended range engines for electric vehicles.
