In terms of subdivision, energy storage has many application scenarios in the power industry, which are generally divided into three major links: the power generation side, the transmission and distribution side, and the power consumption side. On the power generation side, the main functions of energy storage are load regulation, smoothing intermittent energy, improving new energy consumption, increasing the reserve capacity of the power grid, and participating in frequency regulation.
In terms of power transmission and distribution, the configuration of energy storage is to improve circuit quality, reduce line losses, increase the reserve capacity of the power grid, improve the utilization efficiency of power transmission and distribution equipment, and delay the demand for capacity expansion.
In terms of distributed energy storage on the power consumption side, energy storage can improve distributed energy consumption, peak shaving and valley filling, load transfer, reduce electricity costs, and improve power supply reliability and energy quality.
Among numerous energy storage application scenarios, a typical scenario is to install energy storage into a thermal power plant to assist the thermal power unit in providing auxiliary services, mainly frequency modulation services.
There are quite a few thermal power plants in the north, and there are also many new energy (power plants). New energy is highly volatile and needs to be regulated by someone. Currently, thermal power plants are responsible for regulation, but the regulation performance of coal-fired power plants is poor. Therefore, we suggest adding energy storage to adjust the performance of power plants. This model was first proposed by Ruineng, "said Wang Shu.
The first thermal power joint frequency modulation project operated by Ruineng Century was the 2MW Shijingshan Power Plant implemented in 2013. At that time, the energy storage system of Ruineng Century was equipped with cylindrical lithium iron phosphate 26650 lithium batteries, totaling over 60000 units. At that time, it was very expensive, and the cost of the entire project was about 22 million yuan, but the commercialization and technology were very good, so we continued to implement other large-scale projects, and now the typical scale is around 10MW per unit
In addition to the joint frequency regulation of thermal power, Wang Shu believes that the opportunities for lithium batteries in the energy storage field also exist in the power grid energy storage.
On the one hand, the number of 100 megawatt scale projects released by domestic power grid companies is increasing. This year, including Jiangsu Province, which purchased a large number of energy storage equipment to solve local power supply problems in the summer, the actual grid connection has reached 202MWh. Henan and Changsha have also successively released large-scale energy storage bidding projects with a capacity of over 100 megawatts.
On the other hand, China's energy storage market has been growing rapidly in the past two years. According to data provided by Wang Shu, as of the third quarter of this year, the installed capacity of China's energy storage market has maintained an average growth rate of over 60% over the past three years. Except for some projects led by lead-acid battery manufacturers on the user side, the vast majority are lithium batteries, including those used in Ruineng Century Thermal Power Frequency Modulation.
Finally, Wang Shu said, "Lithium batteries are indeed the type of battery that has received the greatest attention from the power storage industry, and I personally believe they have also received the highest recognition. Other technical routes are still relatively difficult.
