European battery manufacturer InoBat announced a partnership with American battery material supplier Group14 Technologies to use Group14's patented silicon based negative electrode material to produce high energy density batteries for automobiles.

According to InoBat, the market demand for high energy density batteries is soaring, and compared to traditional lithium batteries, silicon based anode materials have a higher energy density per unit volume.

Group14 said that the Department of Energy had recognized its "novel, usable nanomaterials and reliable industrial scale processes.". Group14 claims that the SCC55 has five times the capacity of traditional graphite negative electrode lithium batteries and a 50% higher energy density. Its first silicon based negative electrode material factory in Woodinville, Washington, was completed earlier this year with an annual output of 120 tons.

The company also aims to reduce its dependence on cobalt and increase its energy density to 330Wh/kg and 1000Wh/L by the end of 2023. The long-term goal is to remove nickel from batteries and further develop negative electrode technology to achieve the goal of 500Wh/kg.

Rick Luebbe, founder and CEO of Group14, said, "If the automotive industry could be fully electrified, it would mean that a battery industry worth nearly a trillion dollars would be created, with a scale 25 times that of today."

Inobat said it would build a 100 MWh production line in Slovakia. By 2024, it is planned to establish a 10GWh plant.

Before partnering with InoBat Automotive, Group14 had reached a joint venture agreement with SK Materials to establish a plant in South Korea to achieve dual procurement of its patented lithium silicon technology. Existing investors include ATL, BASF, Cabot, Showa Electric and SK Materials.
