Although hydrogen fuel cell vehicles still have a long way to go before large-scale commercial promotion, they do attract many players, such as Toyota, Hyundai, Volkswagen, and BMW.

Recently, BMW announced the start of small-scale production of the BMW iX5 Hydrogen hydrogen fuel cell SUV. It is reported that the efficiency and performance of the iX5 Hydrogen are similar to similar PHEVs, and its mass production marks a milestone for BMW and hydrogen fuel vehicles.

The car is based on the regular version of the BMW X5, manufactured at a factory in Spartansburg, South Carolina, and assembled at BMW's research and innovation center in Munich, Germany.

As a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, it adopts a new chassis design for installing two hydrogen tanks that supply the fuel cell system. These two hydrogen tanks are located under the center aisle and rear seats, respectively, and can carry up to 16 pounds (7.2 kilograms) of hydrogen, which in turn provides energy for the fuel cell in the engine compartment.

BMW claims that this fuel cell vehicle can output a maximum of 374 horsepower and has a similar weight to the X5PHEV, which is approximately 5627 pounds. The vehicle can accelerate from zero to 100 kilometers per hour in 7 seconds, with a maximum speed of 118 miles per hour (approximately 189.9 kilometers per hour), and a range of 310 miles (approximately 498.9 kilometers) under WLTP conditions.

BMW has stated that fuel powered battery power systems will provide carbon free alternatives to customers who cannot meet the needs of electric vehicles. It also stated that hydrogen power will help offset the challenges faced by electrification, especially in medium and heavy trucks.

The car will be tested on the road next spring. Although it is only a pilot project, it basically lays the foundation for BMW's fuel powered battery car.
