Recently, a team of engineers at the University of California, San Diego, developed a scalable biofuel cell that can extract energy from sweat and power electronic products such as LED and Bluetooth adapters.

The battery is composed of a row of dots, each of which is connected by a spring-shaped structure. Half of the dots form the anode of the battery, and the other half forms the cathode. This spring-like structure can be stretched and bent to make the battery flexible without damaging the anode and cathode.

Biofuel cells have an enzyme that can oxidize the lactic acid in human sweat to generate electricity, thus transforming sweat into an energy source. In order to improve the energy density, engineers used screen printing to build a three-dimensional carbon nanotube structure on the top of the anode and cathode. This structure allows engineers to load more enzymes for each anode point. This enzyme can react with lactic acid and silver oxide at the cathode point to generate electricity.

Compared with the existing wearable biofuel cells, the new biofuel cells generate 10 times more energy per unit surface area. In the future, it is expected to power a series of wearable special equipment.
