I. Lithium batteries transported in independent packaging
The first category is lithium batteries transported independently. As a type of battery with lithium metal or lithium alloy as the positive/negative electrode material and using a non-aqueous electrolyte solution, lithium batteries can be divided into two types: lithium metal batteries and lithium-ion batteries. Lithium metal batteries contain metallic lithium and are usually not rechargeable, while lithium-ion batteries do not contain metallic lithium and can be recharged twice. When transported independently, their corresponding UN numbers are 3090 and 3480.
II. Lithium batteries built into equipment
The second category is lithium batteries transported together with equipment. In actual trade transportation, lithium batteries are often transported together with equipment. There are mainly two situations. One is that the battery is installed in the equipment, and the other is that the battery is packaged together with the equipment. In either case, according to whether it contains metallic lithium, the corresponding UN numbers are 3091 and 3481 respectively.
III. Lithium battery-powered vehicles
The third category is equipment or vehicles powered by lithium batteries. In recent years, various new energy vehicles powered by lithium batteries have emerged in an endless stream, including bicycles, cars, balance bikes, etc. The International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code assigns UN numbers 3556 and 3557 to such products.
IV. Energy storage cabinets
Lithium battery packs, lithium-ion battery packs or lithium metal battery packs installed in cargo transport units correspond to the United Nations number UN3536.
Special provisions 188 for export of UN3480 and UN3090:
Lithium metal batteries less than or equal to 1g or lithium metal battery packs less than or equal to 2g.
Lithium-ion batteries less than or equal to 20WH or lithium-ion battery packs less than or equal to 100WH.
Meet the provisions of 2.9.4.1, 2.9.4.5, 2.9.4.6 (if applicable), and 2.9.4.7.
Must have protection measures to prevent short circuits. The inner packaging must be packed in a solid outer packaging that meets the regulations.
Requirements for batteries and battery packs installed in equipment.
6.5.2.1.10 Lithium battery marking.
Except for battery packs installed in equipment, each package must be able to withstand a drop test of 1.2m in any direction.
Except for battery packs installed in equipment or packaged together with equipment, the gross weight of the package must not exceed 30KG.
Summary: In line with the above eight special provisions, domestic shipping can book cabins according to DG exemption, provide a non-hazardous transportation identification report, lithium battery MSDS, and book cabins with UN38.3. Otherwise, a dangerous package certificate is required and booking is made as dangerous goods.
Export of built-in lithium batteries of UN3481 and UN3091:
Batteries and battery packs packaged together with equipment: The packaging meets the requirements of the packaging guidelines, and then is placed in the outer packaging together with the equipment or the packaging completely wraps the battery and battery pack, and then is placed in the packaging that meets the packaging guidelines together with the equipment. The equipment must be fixed and must not move in the outer packaging.
Summary: Provide a shipping transportation identification report. The identification conclusion does not belong to PG II. Provide lithium battery MSDS, UN38.8 and other certificates and export as dangerous goods. The maritime declaration can be exempted from the dangerous package certificate.
Export of UN3171 lithium battery-powered vehicles:
Export as Class 9 dangerous goods. There is no requirement for packaging. The maritime declaration can be exempted from the dangerous package certificate.
