3D nanostructure electrode has many advantages (from: Nawa Technologies)
The French company Nawa Technologies said that it had developed a new electrode design, which is expected to fundamentally improve the chemical performance of existing and future batteries. Previously, the company has been well known in the supercapacitor market. But now, the same technology has also been applied to lithium batteries. In addition to up to 3 times the energy density and 10 times the performance, it also has faster charging speed, up to 5 times the battery life, and quite good cost efficiency.
The focus of the research is on the way of maintaining the active substance in the electrode and the path of the ion when transferring the charge. Take the current typical activated carbon electrode as an example, which is mainly composed of powder, additives and adhesives.
In the case of using carbon nanotubes, they are usually stuck to it in the form of tangled pasta, thus providing a random, chaotic and often blocked path for current-carrying ions (flowing to the collector under load).

On the other hand, Nawa's vertical arrangement of carbon nanotubes can create a comb-like cathode or anode structure, and grow hundreds of billions of straight high-conductivity nanotubes per square centimeter.
Then, these carbon nanotubes that are firmly fixed on the small electrode can be coated with active substances (lithium ions or other), which greatly reduces the distance required for the charge to enter or leave the battery.
Rigid vertical structure can effectively improve power/energy density/charging speed/battery life.
Since each lithium spot is more or less attached to the nanotube used for direct highway (or partial collector), the average free travel of the ion can be greatly reduced.
Pascal Boulanger, the founder and CEO of the company, said that with this new method, lithium ions only need to move a few nanometers on the material instead of a few microns of conventional electrodes.

Therefore, Nawa Technologies can fundamentally improve the power density of the new lithium battery. Even the smaller battery can achieve 10 times the charging and discharging performance. With proper charging infrastructure, the battery can be replenished from 0% to 80% in 5 minutes.
Thanks to the ultra-light nano support and less adhesive/additive gap, the battery body can also be more portable and compact (2~3 times the volume and weight improvement). In addition, the rigid nanotube array and wide surface area can greatly alleviate the performance degradation (5 times life) caused by time.
Finally, Pascal Boulanger said that through the cooperation with lithium battery company, the company plans to let some products with new technologies be tested in the market from 2022 to 2023.
