Classification societies are extremely important for the shipping industry. They formulate technical and operational standards for design, construction, measurement, and testing of different types of ships, transport vessels, and offshore structures. They review ship compliance requirements and issue class certificates. The world's top ten classification societies are DNV (Det Norske Veritas), ABS (American Bureau of Shipping), NK (Nippon Kaiji Kyokai), LR (Lloyd's Register), BV (Bureau Veritas), CCS (China Classification Society), KR (Korean Register of Shipping), Rina (Registro Italiano Navale), RS (Russian Maritime Register of Shipping), and IRClass (Indian Register of Shipping).
DNV - Det Norske Veritas - The largest classification society
Det Norske Veritas, formerly known as DNV GL, is the world's largest classification society. It was established in 2013 after two renowned classification societies, namely Det Norske Veritas headquartered in Norway and Germanischer Lloyd headquartered in Germany, merged into one entity. In 2021, DNV GL removed the surname and was renamed DNV while continuing to retain its original organizational and functional structure. It has formulated specific standards for ships and offshore vessels called class rules.
DNV operates in more than 100 countries, has more than 13,000 employees from different cultures and nationalities, and has more than 350 administrative offices around the world. The organization provides various services for numerous industries other than the maritime sector. It holds a prominent position in oil and gas, innovation and research and development of renewable energy systems, modern power solutions, and the health sector.
This classification society serves more than 14,000 ships and offshore structures worth 265 million tons, accounting for 21% of the global market share. The organization's history can be traced back to 1864 when it was established in Oslo, Norway, responsible for inspecting the operating conditions of Norwegian merchant ships. Since then, it has achieved significant development by providing testing and class certification for ships, offshore installations, and technical services.
ABS - American Bureau of Shipping
The American Bureau Of Shipping, also known as ABS in the shipping industry, was established in 1862 and is a classification society headquartered in the United States. It outlines the goals of protecting human life and property as well as the marine and coastal environment. To this end, the society formulates and develops specific standards for the design, construction, and functional maintenance of ships and offshore equipment.
ABS has formulated its technical and operational framework called "ABS Rules and Guides," and various marine vessels and offshore structures are evaluated and classified according to these rules.
