What is a 21700 lithium battery?
The 21700 lithium battery has a size of 21mm in diameter and 70mm in length, weighs about 68g, and has a capacity ranging from 4000mAh to 5000mAh. Now companies in many countries such as South Korea, China, and the United States are using this model. It is the latest cylindrical lithium battery standard jointly developed by Tesla Motors of the United States and Panasonic of Japan. This can achieve the best balance between volume and capacity and replace the old 18650 battery.
Common parameters of 21700 lithium batteries
The following are several common 21700 lithium battery models and their main characteristics:
INR21700 E5500: The single-cell capacity is 5500mAh, and the internal resistance is about 20mΩ.
INR21700-50S: The capacity is 5000mAh, and the internal resistance is low, suitable for high-energy-density application scenarios.
FEB 21700-5000mAh: The rated capacity is 5000mAh, the nominal voltage is 3.6V, and the energy is 18Wh.
NCR21700A: The capacity is 4800mAh, suitable for high-end electric vehicles and energy storage devices, and the cycle life is ≥1000 times.
BAK Bick 21700 battery cell
The rated capacity of a single section is 5000mAh. Using five sections in series can form a capacity of 25000mAh. The 21700 battery cell has a cycle life of 800 times, which is 2.6 times that of the ordinary national standard GB/T35590.
EVE Energy 50E 21700 lithium-ion battery cell
The single-cell capacity reaches 5000mAh, and it supports up to 1C charging and 3C discharging. It is an energy storage high-energy-density battery cell and can be packaged into battery packs of different specifications. LG 21700 new energy battery
The model is INR21700M50T GS125E055A1. This string of codes indicates that the battery has a diameter of 21mm and a length of 70mm. The single-cell capacity is 5000mAh, the maximum charging voltage is 4.2V, and the minimum discharge voltage is 2.5V.

Tesla and Panasonic jointly developed a new cylindrical battery cell, namely the 21700 cylindrical battery used in Model 3, with an internal resistance of 13 milliohms, a continuous discharge current of 10A and an instantaneous discharge current of 15-20A.
South Korea Samsung 21700 lithium-ion battery
There are three models: INR21700-50S, INR21700-50E, and INR21700-48G.
Samsung 21700 lithium battery requires an ambient temperature of -20 to 50°C for long-term storage.

Weighing about 70g, with a rated voltage of 3.6V, a single-cell capacity of 5000mAh, an internal resistance of 11.5mΩ±5, a continuous large discharge current of up to 30A, an operating temperature of -20°C~45°C, adopting LSD intelligent power lock technology, it can still retain about 85% of its capacity after one year of storage, effectively reducing power loss. It is suitable for use in fields such as sweeping robots, electric bicycles, drones, and solar energy storage.
Samsung 21700-50E lithium-ion battery
The rated voltage is 3.7V, the single-cell capacity is 5000mAh, the minimum capacity is 4950mAh, the internal resistance is 13.5mΩ, the continuous large discharge current can reach 10A (within a temperature environment of 0 to 40 degrees), the charging operating temperature is 10°C~45°C, and the discharging operating temperature is -20°C~60°C.
The charging cut-off voltage is 4.2V, and the discharging cut-off voltage is 2.5V.
Samsung INR21700-48G lithium battery
The rated capacity is 4800mAh, the minimum capacity is 4700mAh, the voltage is 3.6V, the energy density is 17.4Wh, the maximum charging cut-off current is 96mA, the maximum discharging current is 9.6A, and the weight is within 69g.
Advantages of 21700 batteries
The battery energy density is increased by more than 20%.
The energy density of 21700 batteries is better than that of 18650 batteries. According to the information disclosed by Tesla, under existing conditions, the energy density of its produced 21700 battery system is about 300Wh/kg, which is about 20% higher than the 250Wh/kg of its original 18650 battery system. Judging from the test data of Panasonic's power lithium battery cells, the volumetric energy density of its 21700 battery is much higher than that of the 18650 battery cell. The increase in the energy density of a single cell is much higher than the 20% increase after grouping.
The cost of the battery system is reduced by about 9%.
According to the battery price information disclosed by Tesla, Lithium Big Data estimates that the price of the 21700 power lithium battery system is 170 US dollars/Wh. Compared with the price of 18650 at 185 US dollars/Wh, the price reduction can reach about 8.1%. The cost of the 18650 system is about 171 US dollars/Wh. After switching to 21700, the system cost can be reduced by about 9% to reach 155 US dollars/Wh.
After the single-cell capacity is increased, the number of accessories required for PACK is reduced in the same proportion, driving down the PACK cost. After switching from the 18650 model to the 21700 model, the battery cell capacity can reach 3~4.8Ah, a significant increase of 35%. Under the same energy, the number of batteries required can be reduced by about 1/3. Tesla Models electric vehicles use 7104 18650 batteries connected in series and parallel to form a battery pack. On the new Model 3, after adopting 21700, the number of battery cells will be greatly reduced. While reducing the difficulty of system management, it will also reduce the number of metal structural parts and conductive connectors and other accessories used in the battery pack in the same proportion. Tesla's Pack cost accounts for about 24% of the total system cost. It is expected that the reduction in battery pack cost will be considerable.

Samsung mentioned that after it switched to the new 21700 battery, the system can reduce components and weight by 10% compared to the current battery, thereby further reducing the weight of the battery pack and partially improving the energy density of the entire vehicle.
