The material and design of electrode is one of the important restrictions to improve battery power, quantity and charge discharge cycle.

According to foreign media, France's Nawa Technologies said recently that it has developed a new electrode design, which is expected to fundamentally improve the chemical performance of existing and future batteries.

NAWA said that this new electrode system will be put on the market in just 12 months, but the mass production will wait until 2023.

The focus of NAWA research is on the maintenance mode of active substances in the electrode, as well as the route of ion charge transfer.

Take the current typical activated carbon electrode as an example, which is mainly composed of powder, additives and adhesives. In the case of carbon nanotubes, they are usually stuck to them in the form of tangled spaghetti, thus providing a random, chaotic, and often blocked path for current carrying ions (flowing to the collector under load).

The carbon nanotubes vertically arranged in Nawa also create an anode or cathode structure more like a brush, with 100 billion straight high conductivity nanotubes sticking out per square centimeter. The nanotube acts as a part of the linear highway and collector, which can improve the charge discharge performance of the battery by 10 times and the battery life by 5 times.

Vertical structure can improve power, energy density, charging speed and battery life

It is understood that carbon nanotubes are carbon clusters with coaxial tubular structure, which can be divided into different categories according to different characteristics. They are usually classified according to the number of layers and conductivity of the tube wall from the perspective of commercialization. According to the number of layers of carbon nanotubes, carbon nanotubes can be divided into single-walled carbon nanotubes and multi walled carbon nanotubes; As far as its conductivity is concerned, carbon nanotubes can be either metallic or semiconductor, and even different parts of the same carbon nanotube can show different conductivity.

At present, the commercial and large-scale applications of carbon nanotubes are mainly focused on conductive agents and conductive plastics for lithium batteries. It is estimated that more than 75% of the current demand comes from the lithium battery conductive agent field. Propylene and liquid nitrogen are important upstream of the chemical industry chain; Downstream applications include lithium battery service for new energy automobile industry and 3C digital industry, conductive plastics, service for electric power infrastructure, semiconductor industry, etc.

With its good conductivity and unique tubular structure, the conductivity of the positive material can be greatly improved by forming a linear connection with the positive material. At present, carbon nanotubes are in the rapid introduction period of industrial application.

Data shows that in 2018, the penetration rate of carbon nanotubes in the field of power lithium battery will be 31.8%, and in 2020, the penetration rate of carbon nanotubes in the field of power lithium battery will exceed 50%. Industrial Securities predicts that the permeability of carbon nanotube conductive agent will reach 80% by 2025.

Others predict that the compound growth rate of demand in the field of carbon nanotube lithium battery will be about 54% from 2019 to 2025, corresponding to the demand for carbon nanotube slurry of about 380000 tons in 2025, and the corresponding market size of about 13.4 billion yuan. At present, important companies in the carbon nanotube industry include LG Chemical, Tiannai Technology, Cabot, etc.

LG Chemical officially launched the technology research and development of carbon nanotubes in 2011, established a 20 ton pilot production line in 2013, and successfully developed battery materials and conductive composite products in 2014.

At the end of April this year, LG Chem announced that it would actively explore the carbon nanotube market to meet the explosive demand for battery positive conductive materials brought about by the rise of the global electric vehicle market; Up to now, LG Chemical has an output of about 500 tons of carbon nanotubes. It is estimated that by the first quarter of 2021, it will expand its annual output of 1200 tons in Lishui Plant, South Korea, and the company's total output will reach about 1700 tons. On the other hand, LG Chem plans to gradually increase the supply of carbon nanotubes to global IT materials and vehicle customers in North America, Europe, China, etc., and plans to continue to expand the production of carbon nanotubes in 2022.

In April of this year, Cabot, an American conductive agent manufacturer, announced that it had officially completed the transaction of acquiring Sanshun Nano with about 115 million dollars announced at the beginning of this year. The business will be integrated into the company's high-performance materials business department. Sanshun Nano is a leading manufacturer of carbon nanotube in China. This acquisition has greatly enhanced Cabot's influence in the rapidly growing battery market, especially its market position and formulation ability in China. Through this acquisition, Cabot has become the world's only supplier of high-performance carbon materials with commercially successful capabilities of integrating carbon black, carbon nanotubes, carbon nanostructures and dispersion.

Tiannai Technology, the leader of the domestic carbon nanotube industry, is mainly engaged in the R&D, production and sales of nano carbon materials and related products, including carbon nanotube powder, carbon nanotube conductive paste, graphene composite conductive paste, carbon nanotube conductive masterbatch, etc. At present, the company is actively promoting the production of projects with an annual output of 3000 tons of carbon nanotubes and 8000 tons of conductive paste, as well as the collection of 450 tons of by-product hydrogen, 300 tons of graphene, 3000 tons of carbon nanotubes and 10000 tons of conductive paste, and 2000 tons of carbon nanotubes conductive masterbatch.
