How to distinguish between lithium battery charger and lead-acid charger? According to different battery materials, common ones include lithium metal batteries, lithium-ion batteries, lead-acid batteries, lithium iron phosphate batteries, etc. Can lithium battery chargers be compatible with lead-acid battery chargers. Today, let me talk about the difference between lead-acid batteries and lithium battery chargers in batteries.
How to distinguish between lithium battery charger and lead-acid charger?
The charging control methods for lead-acid batteries and lithium battery chargers are different. Due to the fact that lead-acid battery chargers are generally set to two-stage or three-stage charging modes, the voltage levels of lithium batteries and lead-acid batteries are not matched. There are also many types of lithium batteries, and their performance and protection board parameters may vary. Therefore, lithium batteries do not have universal battery chargers like lead-acid batteries. Generally speaking, lithium batteries are equipped with a dedicated charger when they leave the factory. To protect the lithium battery, a dedicated charger is required.
Lithium battery charging control is to first charge according to a constant current, and then when the battery voltage rises to 4.2V, the voltage no longer rises. The charger detects the current and ends charging if the current is less than a certain value. Lithium batteries are sensitive to overcharging, so the protection circuit is complex. The maximum charging rated voltage for a single battery with a nominal voltage of 3.6V is 4.2V, with an allowable error limit of no more than 1%.
The ideal charging current for lead-acid batteries is pulse charging, and pulse charging is best achieved by directly rectifying and unfiltered pulsating DC charging using the 50-60Hz mains power supply we use. Due to the high self discharge rate of lead-acid batteries, constant voltage charging is generally used when using power frequency charging.
Lead acid battery charger combines high-frequency switching power supply technology with embedded microcomputer control technology, using intelligent dynamic adjustment technology to optimize the charging characteristic curve and effectively extend the service life of the battery. It adopts a four stage charging method of constant current/W stage/constant voltage/small constant current, which has the characteristics of high charging efficiency, high reliability, easy operation, light weight, and small size.
There is a significant difference between lithium battery chargers and lead-acid battery three-stage chargers
When the charging current is greater than the set value, only the charging indicator light turns red without changing the output voltage; When the charging current is less than the set value, the charging indicator light turns green without changing the output voltage. That is to say, there is a voltage before and after turning the light, which is the voltage limit value calculated earlier.
Therefore, this current setting value should be referred to as the "turning lamp current", which is more accurate, approximately 0.02C. The tested lithium battery chargers from several manufacturers have a current of approximately 240mA to 260mA when the 10Ah lithium battery pack is turned into a light. After turning green, continue charging for a period of time before the charging current approaches zero. After the traffic light of lead-acid batteries changes from red to green, the charging current will quickly approach zero because the high constant voltage changes to a low constant voltage.
Precautions for charging lithium batteries
1. To extend the lifespan of lithium batteries, it is necessary to regularly charge and discharge them. To develop the habit of charging electric bicycles after using 80% of their electricity, one should not wait until the battery is depleted before charging. In addition, lithium batteries should not be stored for a long time.
2. When charging the electric vehicle battery, the power switch lock must be turned off and the battery cannot be inverted. When charging, it should be fully charged at once and should not be charged multiple times.
3. Electrical appliances should not be stored in a depleted state, so batteries should be fully charged once a month when not in use.
4. Lithium batteries require the use of a matching charger during charging. Due to differences in battery raw materials and production processes, the technical requirements for the charger are also different. Therefore, only using a dedicated charger for charging can prolong the lifespan of lithium batteries and prevent safety hazards.
Precautions for charging lead-acid batteries
1. Do not replace the charger casually, and do not remove the speed limit of the controller
If the mileage requirement for lead-acid batteries is relatively long, multiple chargers can be used. The charger that is recharged during the day should be a separate charger, while the original charger should be used at night. Removing the speed limit of the controller can increase the speed of some vehicles, but in addition to reducing the safety of the vehicle, it can also decrease the battery life.
2. Protect the charger properly
The current lead-acid battery chargers are basically not designed with high vibration resistance. After vibration, many chargers' internal potentiometers will drift, causing the entire parameter to drift and resulting in abnormal charging status. It should also be noted that the charging time should keep the charger ventilated, otherwise it will affect the lifespan of the charger and may also affect the charging status. This will cause damage to the battery, so protecting the charger is very important.
3. Charge every day
Charging every day will keep lead-acid batteries in a cyclic state, extending their lifespan. The memory benefits of lead-acid batteries are not as strong, and frequent discharge can have a significant impact on battery life. Many chargers have a battery charge of 97% to 99% after the indicator light changes to indicate full charge. Although charging only 1% to 3% of the battery has almost negligible impact on its endurance, it can also lead to undercharging accumulation. Therefore, after the battery is fully charged and turns into a light, it is still advisable to continue float charging as much as possible, which is beneficial for suppressing battery vulcanization.
4. Timely charging
Timely charging of lead-acid batteries can eliminate mild sulfurization. If not charged in time, these sulfurization crystals will accumulate and gradually form coarse crystals. Generally, chargers are powerless against these coarse crystals, which will gradually lead to a decrease in battery capacity and shorten battery life.
The above is the distinction between lead-acid batteries and lithium battery chargers. Based on the analysis above, we can conclude that chargers for lead-acid batteries and lithium batteries are not interchangeable. When charging batteries, we must choose a dedicated charger to charge the corresponding battery to avoid mixing and potential safety hazards or accidents.
