According to foreign media reports, NIMS and SoftBank of the National Institute of Materials found that the volume of electrolyte and the area ratio of electrodes are important factors affecting the cycle life of high energy density lithium air batteries. It is reported that the research team has developed a technology that can be used to quantify the amount of products and hydrogen used in the electrochemical reaction of the battery, so as to accurately evaluate the overall balance between reactants and products.
Lithium air battery is light in weight and high in energy density (theoretically several times the energy density of lithium battery), which is expected to become the ultimate rechargeable battery in the future. Therefore, it may be used in many technical fields, such as unmanned aerial vehicles, electric vehicles and household electric power storage systems. The NIMS SoftBank Advanced Technology Development Center, founded in 2018, has been committed to the research of lithium air batteries and promoting the practical application of the batteries in various technologies, including mobile phone base stations, the Internet of Things and high-altitude stations (HAPS).
Extending battery cycle life is critical. However, most of the evaluations on the cycle life of lithium air batteries are focused on single battery modules (such as electrode materials), and only a few studies have been conducted on the actual manufacturing of functional high energy density lithium air batteries and the evaluation of cycle life. In addition, there are few methods for quantitative measurement of substances involved in the electrochemical reaction of batteries, such as oxygen and gaseous by-products as positive active materials. Therefore, researchers were unable to measure the overall balance between reactants and products, so they were unable to determine the important factors affecting the battery cycle life, which led to the slow progress in the application and development of lithium air batteries.
Recently, the research team has developed a new technology that can quantify the oxygen used in electrochemical reactions, as well as the gases and volatile substances appearing in the charging and discharging cycles. Later, the team used this technology to accurately analyze the complex electrochemical reactions occurring in the high energy density lithium air battery (developed by the NIMS SoftBank Advanced Technology Development Center), and found that the cycle life of the lithium air battery was significantly affected by the electrolyte volume and electrode area ratio. This means that in the future, the battery cycle life can be extended by reducing the electrode area while keeping the electrolyte constant. However, reducing the electrode area will reduce the battery energy density. Therefore, when designing batteries and evaluating battery materials, R&D personnel should also optimize the ratio parameters to speed up the development process of lithium air battery applications.
In the future, the research team plans to explore ways to reduce the by-products of the electrochemical reaction of the battery, so that the lithium air battery can be put into practical application as soon as possible.
