However, for a long time, zinc batteries have been considered non rechargeable because after only a few rounds of charging, conductive filaments are generated between the two electrodes inside the zinc battery, ultimately leading to a short circuit between the two electrodes. And this time, the US Navy research team has found a way to suppress the generation of electric filaments inside batteries by making the zinc anode into a porous sponge like structure. In this way, during the charging and discharging period of the battery, the current distribution on the zinc anode will be more uniform, making it difficult to generate conductive filaments.
