According to the Daily Mail on August 5, German scientists invented a translucent colored sunglasses lens that can use solar energy to charge mobile phones. The organic solar cell of the lens has a microprocessor and two electricity monitors to display the intensity of sunlight and ambient temperature. The lens can even use solar energy to charge mobile phones. The researchers said that this technology may lay the foundation for further application of solar energy, such as embedding organic solar cells into windows or glass skylights.
Organic solar cells can use solar energy to generate electricity. They are transparent, light, and can be made into different colors and shapes. It can replace the traditional heavier and harder silicon solar cells in a wider range of fields.
Researchers from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany used the sunglasses as a sample to show the application of organic solar cells. We use this solar technology to fill the gap in other solar technologies, said Dr. Alexander Koseman, director of the Organic Solar Photovoltaic Group of the Institute's Optical Technology. This kind of intelligent solar glasses can self negative energy, so as to measure and display the sunlight intensity and temperature. It also works under the condition that the indoor illumination is as low as 500 lux (general office or living environment illumination). Even indoors, the two lenses can produce 200 micro watts of power, which is enough to charge hearing aids or pedometers. The lens is 1.6 mm thick and weighs 6 grams. It is no different from ordinary lenses, so it has commercial value. The microprocessor and display are embedded in the temple of the glasses to display the light intensity and ambient temperature in the form of a histogram.
Dominic Randall, a doctoral student who assisted in the development of solar glasses, said: The solar glasses we developed are to show how the organic solar cells work in areas that traditional photovoltaic cells cannot be used. They are mechanically flexible and can be formulated according to different specific requirements to produce the corresponding color, transparency, shape and size. Therefore, the organic solar cells have attracted much attention.
Professor Kesman also revealed that another application of solar cells is to integrate them into buildings. As the facade of glass high-rise buildings is usually shielded, how to use organic solar cells to convert light energy into electricity is a problem faced by researchers. MIT researchers are making efforts to this end. In 2013, the research team of MIT's Microsystem Technology Laboratory announced that they are inventing a transparent solar cell that can convert windows or electronic products into generators. For engineers conducting basic research on organic solar cells and semiconductor components in the Energy System Materials Research Center, the future is to use roll to roll technology to cover the surface of large objects with organic solar cells.
