Recently, a friend asked me if it is possible to replace the lead-acid battery of my electric vehicle with a lithium battery, as the new national standard has been introduced? As a mechanic, my advice for everyone regarding this issue is not to replace it. Why do I say that?
Firstly, as we all know, after the introduction of the new national standards, there have been strict regulations on various standards for electric vehicles, which means that the testing of electric vehicles will be more stringent. On the other hand, enterprises must also possess 3C certification and electric motorcycle qualifications. Overall, if you replace your lead-acid battery with a lithium battery, you are likely to face the risk of not being able to get it registered and on the road.
Secondly, if replacing a lead-acid battery with a lithium battery, it is necessary to consider that its voltage must remain the same as the original lead-acid battery. In addition, the charger must also be replaced with a dedicated lithium battery charger. Of course, there is also a problem. If the lithium battery is installed improperly or has some quality issues, it may burn out the controller, which is one of the reasons why installation is not recommended.
In addition, when replacing lead-acid batteries with lithium batteries, the size of the battery compartment also needs to be considered. Generally, lead-acid battery compartments are relatively large, while lithium batteries have relatively small volumes. If you want to replace them, this factor must be taken into consideration. If the gap is too large after installation, it is easy to cause small batteries inside to shake and reduce their lifespan.
Of course, the most important issue is the price. Generally, the price of lithium batteries is several times that of lead-acid batteries, which reflects their low cost-effectiveness and does not meet the standards for ordinary users to choose electric vehicles. Although lithium batteries have the characteristics of light weight, longer battery life, and longer lifespan than before, the effect in actual operation is not as obvious.
Finally, compared to lead-acid batteries, lithium batteries have poorer stability and are prone to explosion risks if exposed to water or mishandled. Therefore, this is also an important reason why I do not recommend replacing lead-acid batteries with lithium batteries. Another thing to note is that lithium batteries have a multi piece structure, and any problem with one piece will affect the overall quality.
In short, whether from the provisions of the new national standard or from a practical perspective, as a mechanic, I do not recommend replacing electric vehicle lead-acid batteries with lithium batteries.
