Lithium primary batteries contain lithium metal elements, which are generally disposable and cannot be charged. It is easy to cause spontaneous combustion when exposed to heat in high-altitude environments.

If lithium batteries are directly placed in luggage for check-in, if the luggage is squeezed or collided in the narrow cargo space, it will cause lithium battery self ignition, seriously threatening flight safety.

Firstly, according to civil aviation regulations, lithium batteries cannot be shipped. Whether a lithium battery can be carried on an aircraft mainly depends on its capacity. The controversy surrounding the special shipping of lithium batteries has been ongoing in the industry for many years. Previously, the Federal Special Services Administration of the United States had issued a notice to special companies warning them not to carry large quantities of lithium batteries. Lithium ion battery shipping generally requires MSDS and UN38.3 test reports. If the weight of the lithium battery is less than 45KG, it is recommended to use lithium battery express delivery, as this does not require MSDS or UN38.3 testing.

New regulations for lithium battery shipping

1. Restrict the carrying of lithium batteries. With the approval of the special company, electronic devices containing lithium batteries exceeding 100Wh but not exceeding 160Wh can be carried on board. Each passenger cannot carry more than two such backup batteries and cannot be checked in.

Lithium batteries and backup battery equipment with a capacity not exceeding 100Wh do not need to be declared. Electronic devices can be placed in checked luggage or carried with hand luggage, and a reasonable number of backup batteries can only be placed in hand luggage for boarding.

3. During the flight, please turn off the power of the lithium battery device you carry to prevent accidental startup of the device; Individual backup batteries are individually packaged with electrode protection to prevent self explosion and self ignition caused by friction, collision, and short circuit.
