The demand for copper foil downstream products with copper clad panels has increased significantly

Copper foil is divided into electrolytic copper foil and rolled copper foil. Electrolytic copper foil is mostly used for making lithium batteries or rigid copper clad plates, while rolled copper foil is mostly used for flexible copper clad plates. The important application scenarios of lithium copper foil are new energy vehicles and consumer electronics, while the application scenarios of copper clad plates are communication devices and consumer electronic components. Copper foil accounts for approximately 5% to 8% of the cost of lithium batteries. As a key auxiliary material for lithium batteries, copper foil serves as a negative electrode active material carrier and conductor.

As a downstream product of copper foil, there has been a significant increase in domestic demand for copper clad panels in recent months, leading to an increase in import unit prices. In November 2020, the unit prices of imported and exported copper clad panels in China were 21.52 and 5.73 US dollars per kilogram, respectively, with monthly year-on-year rates of 9.4% and -4.2%, reflecting strong domestic demand and a gradual increase in printed circuit board production.

New energy vehicles drive higher demand for lithium copper foil

As new energy vehicles continue to expand their battery capacity, the requirements for upstream products are gradually increasing. Chen Yubi, Executive Vice President of Nord Group, stated that in recent years, due to improving battery performance and reducing costs, the demand for copper foil by power lithium battery companies has increased from 12 micrometers to 6 micrometers, and leading companies have even begun to try to introduce 4-5 micrometer products. The demand for high-end products continues to increase, prompting manufacturers to accelerate the research and development of new products.
