2、 Plant MFCs

Another renewable and sustainable substrate that MFCs can use for power generation is plant root exudates, also known as plant MFCs. When plants grow, they produce carbohydrates such as glucose, some of which seep into the roots. The microorganisms near the roots convert carbohydrates into protons, electrons, and carbon dioxide.

In plant MFCs, protons are transferred through membranes and then recombined with oxygen to complete the electron transfer circuit. By connecting the load to the circuit, the generated electrical energy can be utilized.

Factory MFC can completely change the power production of isolated communities that cannot be connected to the power grid. In towns, streets can be illuminated with trees.

3、 Microbial desalination tank

Another variant of microbial fuel cells is microbial desalination batteries. These devices utilize bacteria to generate electricity, such as from wastewater, while also desalinating water. Place the water to be desalinated into a chamber sandwiched between the anode and cathode chambers of MFCs, using a membrane of ions with negative (anionic) and positive (cationic) charges.

When bacteria in the anode chamber consume wastewater, protons are released. These protons cannot pass through the anion membrane, so negative ions enter the anode chamber from the brine. At the cathode, protons are consumed, so positively charged ions move from the brine to the cathode chamber, causing the water in the middle chamber to dilute. The ions released from the anode and cathode chambers help improve power generation efficiency.

Traditional seawater desalination is currently very energy intensive and therefore costly. A process that achieves large-scale seawater desalination while producing (without consuming) electricity will be revolutionary.
