How they work

MFCs use a system consisting of anode and cathode electrodes, which can be input or output through current. A common MFCs system consists of an anode chamber and a cathode chamber separated by a membrane. Bacteria grow on the anode and convert the substrate into carbon dioxide, protons, and electrons.

The generated electrons are then transferred to the cathode chamber through an external circuit, while the protons pass through the thin film. In the cathode chamber, the reaction between protons and electrons consumes oxygen and forms water. As long as the substrate continues to transform, electrons will flow, which is electricity.

Generating electricity through MFCs has many advantages: the system can be established anywhere; They produce less "sludge" than traditional wastewater treatment methods such as activated sludge systems; They can be small-scale, but modular design can be used to build larger systems; They have a high tolerance to salinity; They can run at room temperature.

The availability of various renewable substrates that can be used for power generation in MFCs has the potential to completely change power production in the future. These substrates include organic matter in urine, wastewater, substances secreted by living plants into the soil (root exudates), inorganic waste such as sulfides, and even gas pollutants.
