When plants grow, they produce carbohydrates such as glucose, some of which seep into the roots. The microorganisms near the roots convert carbohydrates into protons, electrons, and carbon dioxide.

In plant MFCs, protons are transferred through membranes and then recombined with oxygen to complete the electron transfer circuit. By connecting the load to the circuit, the generated electrical energy can be utilized.
