Recently, Chalmers University of Technology has demonstrated a new type of "massless" battery that can serve as both a power source and a structural component of automobiles. The reason why it is called "massless" is because fundamentally, when a battery becomes part of a load-bearing structure, its weight disappears. Calculations have shown that this multifunctional battery can greatly reduce the weight of electric vehicles.

In 2018, scientists published a study describing a carbon fiber form with the correct crystal arrangement, which can provide both the stiffness required for automotive structures and the electrochemical performance required for energy storage. As part of the effort to translate this research into practical applications, the research team at Chalmers Institute of Technology has produced a carbon fiber structured battery.

Researchers say that the performance of this type of battery structure is ten times better than all previous models of batteries. And since carbon fiber is a key pillar of this research, this "massless" battery can serve as both an electrode, conductor, and load-bearing material.
