CATL's involvement in the electrolyte process

On December 9, 2020, the Longyan Municipal Government of Fujian Province announced the environmental impact assessment report of CATL's subsidiary, Times Sikang Fluorine New Energy Materials Co., Ltd., which showed that CATL had built its own electrolyte industry chain base. The project was located in Jiaoyang Industrial Zone, Jiaoyang Town, Shanghang County, Longyan City, Fujian Province, with a first phase investment of 589 million yuan; Product and scale: The main products include 3750t/a fluorodisulfone amino lithium (solid powder, hereinafter referred to as: new lithium salt or LiFSI) and 4166.7t/a fluorodisulfone amino lithium solution (containing 30% fluorodisulfone amino lithium and 70% EMC methyl ethyl carbonate).

The relevant person in charge stated that CATL is involved in the lithium battery electrolyte material process, producing key materials such as new lithium salts LiFSI, which require a large amount of EMC methyl ethyl carbonate as a solvent. The only supplier of this type of solvent is the industry leader Shida Shenghua, and it is expected to achieve 20000 tons of EMC supply by 2022.

At the CIBF in Shenzhen, the relevant person in charge of Shi Dashenghua stated that "the company has 60000 tons of EMC/DEC and monthly shipments of over 4000 tons of methyl ethyl carbonate EMC. Currently, supply is in short supply, and the price has increased from 16000 yuan/ton to 20000 yuan/ton".
