There are many types of rechargeable batteries, but they require high energy density, light weight, and high discharge current when used in aircraft models. Currently, nickel cadmium batteries, nickel hydrogen batteries, and lithium-ion batteries are urgently needed. The internal resistance of rechargeable batteries is low, so be careful to avoid short circuits during use, otherwise it may cause burns and fire.
The crucial feature of nickel cadmium batteries (Ni Cd) is their excellent high current discharge performance, which meets the short time and high power requirements of aircraft models. A crucial performance indicator of rechargeable batteries is the discharge rate. The so-called discharge rate refers to the ratio of the maximum continuous discharge current of a battery to its capacity C. C represents the number of hours required to discharge in one ampere. Usually, a number is added before capacity C. For example, the discharge rate of the Grignard 1800mah battery is 10C, which means its maximum continuous discharge capacity is 18A. It can be seen that the discharge rate is a crucial indicator for evaluating the emergency discharge performance of the battery. Due to differences in processing technology and structure, the discharge rate of different brands of batteries often varies. Domestic nickel insulated batteries are generally between 6C and 12C, while imported batteries are usually higher, especially for lithium-ion batteries specifically designed for model aircraft, which can often reach around 20C. The first step in choosing a battery is to choose one with a high discharge rate.
However, nickel insulated batteries have a low energy density and a memory effect. Waste batteries cause significant environmental pollution and are quickly phased out. Currently, they are only used in situations with extremely high current output. Nickel hydrogen battery (NiMH) is an environmentally friendly rechargeable battery with the same performance and charging method as nickel insulated batteries. The nominal voltage is also 1.25V, but the power density is higher. It has replaced nickel insulated batteries in many occasions, but its high current discharge performance is not as good as nickel insulated batteries, usually around 7C.
Nickel barrier batteries and nickel hydrogen batteries have the same series of models, with commonly used models including SC, A, AA (No. 5), AAA (No. 7), etc. In addition, there are also some special types of batteries, which are usually elongated or shortened models derived from standard battery model specifications. Battery cells are sometimes indicated directly by the size of the battery, such as 18650 and 1848, which indicate individual cells with a diameter of 18 millimeters and a length of 65 millimeters and 8 millimeters, respectively. In the aircraft model, both the motor and receiver need to use a power supply, and their voltage is generally above 5V, while the power pack is generally above 9-12V. This requires multiple batteries to be connected in series, usually connected by spot welding with nickel plates. Amateur production can use copper foil soldering, but it is important to note that the soldering time is short to prevent battery damage.
