In terms of energy density, its performance is not significantly different from that of ordinary lithium-ion batteries. However, due to the single cell voltage of the battery being only 1.2V, which is one-third of that of lithium-ion batteries, the volume of its battery pack is much larger than that of lithium-ion batteries when the demand voltage is constant, which is also an important disadvantage of nickel hydrogen batteries.
However, Toyota's insistence on using nickel hydrogen batteries is not entirely unreasonable. Once, there was an investigation conducted by American automotive media. After conducting inspections, they found that the first generation Prius, which used nickel hydrogen batteries, maintained the same level of fuel consumption and power performance as the new car after 10 years and 330000 kilometers of driving. There was no obvious decrease in battery capacity or performance, I believe that such excellent stability is also the reason why Toyota uses nickel hydrogen batteries.
