9. In anhydrous environments, graphene hydrogen fuel cell membranes can improve battery efficiency
Researchers from the Swanson School of Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh have found that graphene (a two-dimensional polymer of carbon dioxide and hydrogen) has an unusual characteristic of forming an anhydrous pipeline, which means protons can be transported without water. Invisibly leading the trend of developing hydrogen fuel power cells, which can be used in vehicles and other energy systems.
Proton Conduction Membrane (PEM) is the core of proton exchange membrane fuel power cells. Within the fuel power cells, the proton exchange membrane serves as the transport and supply channel for protons. This membrane has high requirements for temperature and moisture content. When the temperature is too high or the humidity drops, it will consume the water membrane and prevent proton migration through the membrane.
Dr. Johnson said, "Our computer model shows that due to the unique structure of graphene, it is very suitable for fast proton transmembrane and electron transfer through circuits under anhydrous conditions. This indicates that hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are within reach as the best alternative vehicles in the future.
10. Graphene film can reduce nuclear decontamination energy by 100 times
According to the research of Manchester University, compared with the existing technology, graphene can help reduce the energy consumption cost of heavy water production and decontamination in nuclear power plants by more than 100 times. The team led by Dr. MarceloLozada Hidalgo demonstrated a fully scalable graphene membrane prototype that can more effectively produce heavy water, resulting in more environmentally friendly and affordable nuclear power.
Now, Manchester Group has developed a fully expandable prototype membrane and demonstrated isotope separation in pilot scale research. They found that efficient separation will significantly reduce the input of the original isotope mixture to be processed, which reduces capital costs and energy requirements.
Researchers believe that the energy efficiency of purifying overweight hydrogen will be greater in the future, which is an important global concern.
11. Engineering Miracle - Graphene as an Electrode Material for Electronic Equipment
Graphene has great development prospects in the electronic industry, especially as a transparent and conductive electrode material for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), solar cells, and wearable electronic products.
Nowadays, ITO is the most commonly used material for transparent conductive electrodes. Whelan explained that the next focus of work is to improve the conductivity of the transferred graphene layer, thereby improving the power efficiency of OLEDs. We have planned two possible routes: firstly, we can stack multiple graphene layers. 2、 We can chemically doped graphene, which means we can introduce impurities that affect electrical properties. This can make graphene more competitive with ITO. Whelan said that in the future, we hope graphene can become a standard material for flexible electronic electrodes, such as for manufacturing flexible screens.
