Scientists at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory of the US Department of Energy have developed a new electrolyte that not only solves the problem of short circuit ignition in lithium-ion batteries, but also significantly improves battery efficiency and lifespan. Researchers claim that this discovery may lead to more powerful and practical next-generation rechargeable batteries, such as lithium-sulfur, lithium-air, and lithium-metal batteries.
Currently, most rechargeable batteries are lithium-ion batteries, with the anode made of lithium or other materials and the cathode usually made of graphite. When the battery is connected, the flow of electrons between the two poles generates an electric current. In order to control electrons, positively charged lithium ions will pass through the electrolyte from one pole to the other. However, the low energy storage capacity of graphite limits the capacity of lithium-ion batteries. So in the 1970s, people developed rechargeable batteries based on lithium cathodes. The reason for choosing lithium is because it has more than 10 times more energy storage capacity than graphite. But the problem is that this can lead to dendritic lithium dendrite growth at the micro level, leading to short circuit faults in the battery. For many years, many people have been trying to solve this problem.
Some scientists have used anode materials with protective coatings, while others have manufactured electrolyte additives. Some solutions do indeed eliminate dendrites, but they also result in significant reductions in battery power and charge. There are other solutions that can only slow down the occurrence of this phenomenon, but cannot stop the growth of dendrites.
According to the report, this new electrolyte developed by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory of the US Department of Energy not only perfectly solves the dendritic problem, but also helps lithium-ion batteries achieve 99% efficiency, increasing their energy density per unit area by more than 10 times. This is expected to significantly reduce the production cost and size of batteries, and will also significantly improve the safety of these batteries.
Researchers are evaluating various additives to further improve the performance of electrolytes and achieve an efficiency of over 99.9% in lithium-ion batteries.
