However, underwater drones also have some drawbacks, such as the limited distance they can shoot with each charge. Therefore, Open Water Power, a startup funded by Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has developed a battery that can convert electricity from seawater, extending the working distance of underwater drones by ten times!

Underwater drones typically use lithium batteries, but this type of battery can cause some problems. For example, this type of battery may cause a fire, so airplanes generally do not transport lithium batteries and are transported by large ships. The R&D team of Open Water Power has developed a better battery. The company has previously developed car engines that use air as an oxidant for chemical reactions, but now they need to use seawater to power underwater drones.

Ian Salmon McKay from Open Water Power stated that the newly developed battery can "drink" seawater while discharging waste. Compared to the onshore engine's discharge method, the technology's discharge method does not cause much damage to the environment.

The new battery consists of an aluminum alloy anode, a nickel alloy cathode, and an alkaline electrolyte inside. After seawater enters the battery, the cathode decomposes it into hydroxide anions and hydrogen gas, which then react with the aluminum anode to generate aluminum hydroxide and release electrons for power supply.
