With the rapid development of lithium-ion battery packs and new energy devices, while improving our lives, problems have also arisen. The Samsung Note 7, iPhone battery explosion accident, and the recent crab island bus chain burning incident have raised concerns about new energy technology.
Taking the internal installation of lithium-ion batteries in mobile phones as an example, the main reasons for the explosion of lithium-ion battery packs are as follows:
1、 External short circuit
External short circuits may be caused by improper operation or misuse. Due to external short circuits, the discharge current of the battery is high, which can cause the cell to heat up. High temperatures can cause the diaphragm inside the cell to contract or completely damage, resulting in internal short circuits and explosions.
2、 Internal short circuit
Due to the occurrence of internal short circuits, the battery cell discharges with high current, resulting in a large amount of heat and burning the diaphragm, resulting in even greater short circuits. This leads to high temperatures in the battery cell, causing the electrolyte to decompose into gas and causing excessive internal pressure. When the shell of the battery cell cannot withstand this pressure, the battery cell will explode.
3、 Overcharge
When the battery cell is overcharged, excessive release of lithium from the positive electrode can cause changes in the structure of the positive electrode, and excessive release of lithium can easily prevent it from being inserted into the negative electrode, leading to lithium precipitation on the surface of the negative electrode. Moreover, when the voltage reaches 4.5V or above, the electrolyte will decompose and produce a large amount of gas. All of the above may cause an explosion.
4、 Excessive moisture content
The water can react with the electrolyte in the cell to produce gas. When charging, it can react with the generated lithium to generate Lithium oxide, which will cause the cell capacity loss and easily overcharge the cell to generate gas. The decomposition voltage of the water is low and it is easy to decompose to generate gas when charging. When this series of generated gases will increase the internal pressure of the cell, and when the shell of the cell cannot bear, the cell will explode.
