The technological development of high-energy lithium batteries in various countries around the world has always been intense, such as the use of new lead-acid batteries, lithium-ion batteries, and fuel power batteries.
Lead–acid battery is not only a conventional underwater power supply and auxiliary power supply, but also an emergency power supply for nuclear power. Lead–acid battery is still the most commonly used battery for conventional power in the world today because of its obvious advantages such as mature technology, reliable performance, low manufacturing cost, etc. However, modern Lead–acid battery have the disadvantages of long charging time, low efficiency of high rate charging and discharging, and low specific energy and power. According to the requirements of the new generation, more advanced lead-acid batteries need to be developed to meet mobility needs and improve conventional tactical missions.
A unmanned aircraft developed by NASA, the Helios, uses fuel powered batteries as its power, setting a world record for flying altitude, reaching an altitude of 32160 meters. Boeing and the Advanced Research Projects Agency of the United States have signed a contract for the development of a fuel cell power system for unmanned aerial vehicles. According to the design requirements, the new type of fuel cell unmanned aerial vehicle will extend the duration of its flight in the air from a few hours to several weeks. The application of Siemens fuel power cells in German AIP systems is relatively mature. The 212A U3l, which was piloted in April 2003, is one of the first modern AlP Proton-exchange membrane fuel power cells.
In the United States, lithium-ion batteries have become one of the American standard battery series. Yardney Company in the United States has developed three lithium-ion power lithium batteries for underwater equipment, including: (1) UUV battery system, with a total energy of 10kWh. A total of 360 monomers, with a monomer capacity of 8Ah; (2) The 75kW level lithium-ion battery for electric use is composed of 100 prismatic single cell batteries connected in series. The battery pack provides a current of 250A, and the maximum weight specific power of the battery pack is 650W/kg; (3) The micro high-performance lithium-ion battery system was first installed on the ASDS-1 boat in 2005. The total energy of the lithium-ion battery is 1.2 MWh, and the weight specific energy of the individual battery is 170-200Wh/kg. In addition, Yardney's lithium-ion battery pack has been widely used in underwater equipment such as Sonobuoy, acoustic transmitter and deep submersibles.
