In wastewater treatment, aeration is a process that consumes a lot of energy but requires the removal of pollutants. The pump blows air into the wastewater to provide oxygen for the microorganisms in the treatment tank. In return, these bacteria oxidize organic matter into carbon dioxide and remove it from wastewater. This process is an industrial standard and has been proven for over a century. Now researchers at Washington State University and the University of Idaho have created their own methods to change the original process.

Microbial fuel cell use microorganisms to convert Chemical energy into electrical energy. In wastewater treatment, Microbial fuel cell can replace aeration and capture electrons from wastewater organics. These electrons themselves are waste products of microbial metabolism. All living organisms are striving to release excess electrons. This process is called respiration or fermentation. The electricity generated by microorganisms can be used for useful applications in wastewater treatment plants themselves. This technology kills two birds with one stone, saving energy for wastewater treatment and generating electricity.

In their project, the researchers used their unique Microbial fuel cell system to replace aeration. Their novel wastewater treatment system utilizes microorganisms that generate electricity to purify wastewater. These microorganisms are called electrophilic reagents.

This work will one day reduce reliance on high energy consuming processes in water treatment. Most of the energy required in these processes is provided by activated sludge. The energy consumption generated during water treatment processes accounts for approximately 4-5% of global anthropogenic carbon dioxide production. The researchers published their work in the Journal of Bioelectrochemistry. In addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, reducing energy consumption in wastewater treatment can also save billions of dollars in annual operating and maintenance costs.
