Lead–acid battery capacity detection

1. Visual inspection

Visually inspect the appearance of the battery for any leakage, deformation, cracks, stains, corrosion, and loose nuts.

2. Capacity testing method

The main batteries used in the UpS system are mostly lead-acid maintenance free batteries, with a single battery voltage of 12V. In order to grasp the approximate capacity of the battery pack at any time, it is necessary to conduct a verification discharge test. The method is:

(1) In the UpS power supply system, turn off the rectifier (UpS input) and allow the battery to directly supply power to the load carried by the UpS. Before and after discharging the battery pack, measure the terminal voltage, temperature, specific gravity, room temperature, and discharge time of each battery. Discharge 30%~40% of Nameplate capacity.

(2) After discharging, the battery should be charged with 1.2 times the discharged amount.

(3) Based on the measured data, create a discharge curve for comparison during future testing.

3. Judgment of outdated batteries

Backward batteries have a low terminal voltage during discharge, so they should be measured in the discharge state. If the terminal voltage is the lowest during three consecutive discharge cycles, it can be considered as a backward battery in the group.
